Spotlight: What’s happening this weekend

It’s going to be another music and food-filled week on the Central Coast for the second week of August.

Before you enjoy the different adult activities being offered up and down the coast, take the kiddies to the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum. On Friday, the museum will be hosting a farm day where children will be able to get on a John Deere tractor and make farm animals in the art area. The event is during normal business hours and price is the cost of admission into the museum.

Heritage Oaks Bank reports huge losses

Heritage Oaks Bancorp on Wednesday reported a second quarter loss of $5.8 million and said it was continued to work through its problem loans and reduce its level of total non-performing assets. [MarketWatch]

In comparison, during the second quarter of 2009, the San Luis Obispo based bank reported a loss of $500,000.

Summer Concert in Arroyo Grande, event photos

Music, roses and a blue and white bandstand set the tone for a Sunday afternoon as old-fashioned and summery as a glass of homemade lemonade. Bordered by blocks of vintage homes and white picket fences, fragrant with lavender and fresh-mown grass, the free Summer Concert Series in old town Arroyo Grande is almost like a step back in time.

That step-back feeling was furthered this weekend by the music. Bluegrass band Little Black Train played first, combining turn-of-the-century gospel, blues and Celtic dance tunes with newly-crafted lyrics and melodies Celtic band Sligo Rags followed, a lively whirl of Irish folk and toe-tapping bluegrass banjo.

Dean ousts Cal Poly journalism chair

Cal Poly Liberal Arts College Dean Linda Halisky asked journalism department chair Bill Loving to step down Thursday. When he refused, the dean announced he would be terminated, amid allegations by a faculty member that she had been treated unfairly.

University officials said that Graphic Communication Department Chair Harvey Levenson, will replace Loving on Aug. 20, but declined to discuss Loving’s termination, saying they do not discuss personnel matters. Loving will continue working at Cal Poly as a tenured professor.

Police spend thousands repairing new cruisers

San Luis Obispo police have spent $37,434 in seven months repairing and maintaining 10 high speed police cruisers, causing some to question if the Dodge Chargers are prone to malfunctions, or are the breakdowns the result of poor care and maintenance.

Police insiders contend that the new fleet of Dodge Chargers has been plagued with repair issues, including brake problems, two blown engines and a broken transmission at an average monthly cost of $535 per car during the past seven months.
