Federal investigation into Atascadero shifts into high gear

Federal agents from several agencies including the FBI and FEMA were in the city of Atascadero a few weeks ago asking questions about the Printery – the city’s former youth center – and searching through records related to the alleged theft of FEMA funds by the city of Atascadero, city officials said.

“He asked me when the last time the Printery was used actively by the city,” said Kevin Campion, the director of the Atascadero Skate Park who told the investigator that he was not involved in youth activities until a few years ago. “He was pretty aggressive.”

Jewelers’ suspicions lead to arrest of serial burglars

After Atascadero police failed to link a stolen diamond ring report with a report of two suspicious-looking men trying to sell an expensive diamond ring to a jewelry store, the victim took it upon her self and tracked down her diamond ring worth approximately $25,000.

The ring was allegedly stolen out of the victim’s vehicle at her Atascadero residence.

The actions of three employees at K-Jon’s Jewelers in Atascadero and the victim, who officials declined to identify for this story, would lead to the arrests of two men who allegedly burglarizing more than 100 cars – including one owned by a police detective – during the past year.

Mr. Rick’s bikini contest, event photos

Contestants and the crowd alike were in for a hot time at Mr. Rick’s fourth Annual Bikini Contest. Packed to the overflow with energy, cocktails, a thumping beat, and — of course — heel and string-clad contestants, the show made for a lively afternoon. The crowd spilled continually out into the palm-tree-lined patio for a breath of the ocean breeze and gathered to relax in the summery shade of the fronds.

Grand prize winner Monica Racz, flirting a pink and black lace concoction, received a giant $1,000 check amidst enthusiastic cheers. The show ended in a flourish of cocktails and flashing photos before trickling out to a cooling afternoon by the sea.

Is there fair justice?

He was convicted of felony manslaughter and drug possession, but he never spent a day in jail. In fact, he was permitted to leave the country to vacation in Europe while on unsupervised probation.

Rubin family members are upset that Alex Forster, the man convicted of killing Francheska Rubin in 2008, received no jail time and until last week was not required to conform to the probation requirements of drug testing and supervision while others charged with the same offense have been treated differently.
