Closed state parks cost Central Coast jobs

We must take a stand to fix our state parks, so that we do not continue to lose jobs on the Central Coast – right at the moment when our visitor-serving economy needs them the most. A recent study found that state park visitors on average spend $57.63 in neighboring communities each time they visit a state park or beach.

Politicians talk a lot about “jobs, jobs, jobs,” but seldom offer proposals to do anything to actually save, let alone create, them. Fixing how we fund state parks will protect and add jobs along our coastline.

Fix California

California’s 12.3 percent unemployment rate now ranks as the third worst in the nation. Other large diverse states post much lower rates which translates to millions of Californians who are unnecessarily unemployed and underemployed.

These are not simply cold numbers on a spreadsheet. Every job loss entails real pain for some family. Employment is a matter of human dignity. Revenues for our schools are down. Families are losing their homes. Those climbing the ladder of success are falling back into poverty. That’s why jobs are the most important issue – at least for me – in the contest to fill California’s 15th Senate District in the August 17 election.

Spotlight: What’s happening this weekend

Cal Poly journalism department on the chopping block

An official at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo has warned journalism staff and faculty during several meetings over the past few weeks that the department will be shut down if they can’t learn to get along.

“The dean said she will give the department till March to get along,” said Michael Pershall, journalism department electronic system specialist. “If this department goes away, I won’t have a job.”

Internal affairs investigates allegations of internal affairs at sheriff’s department

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff officials are conducting an internal affairs investigation into a male sheriff’s deputy and a female jail correctional officer who are accused of sexual misconduct on the job and of filing a false report against the wife of a former San Luis Obispo police officer.

Patty Limon says that Deputy Gower Slane filed a sheriff’s report last spring claiming she had sent two threatening Facebook messages and one harassing voice message to correctional officer Jamie Elwell.
