San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Grover Beach man after a homemade pyrotechnic device burned his 13-year-old son.

Around 10:15 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a report that a powder flare discharged and injured a juvenile on Canet Road in rural Morro Bay. When they arrived at the scene, an ambulance had already transported the boy to a hospital where he received treatment for undisclosed injuries.

An investigation conducted by sheriff’s detectives and the Bomb Task force determined that the teen’s father consented to the creation of an illegal pyrotechnic device and assisted in the construction of it.

Deputies arrested Trevor Harris, 48, and booked him in San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of willful cruelty to a child with possible injury or death. Harris also faces two unlisted charges. His bail is set at $150,000.

An investigation into the pyrotechnic incident is ongoing.
