Sen. Barbara Boxer
Just as the 2014 election season comes to close, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer announced she won’t seek reelection in 2016.
After serving 22 years in the Senate, Boxer announced she would not run for a fifth six-year term. Boxer’s retirement sets the stage for an intriguing political battle as Republicans take control of the Senate.
Potential Republican candidates include former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. For the Democratic Party, likely candidates include Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Kamala Harris.
Boxer, 74, said that nether her age nor the constant fighting in the Senate influenced her decision to retire, in an interview with her grandson, Zach Rodham, 19.
