Robert Fowler files $127 million personal bankruptcy

Developer Robert Fowler, a partner in the failed R.W. Hertel and Sons, filed for personal bankruptcy listing $127.6 million in debt, on Sept. 26.

Fowler said $105.6 million are personal guarantees he made on business loans, according to his bankruptcy filing. He claimed assets of 4.8 million that include his personal residence in Santa Margarita.

How Arroyo Grande blew a million dollars

At the same time the Arroyo Grande City Council was looking to reduce the deficit by cutting money from after school programs and law enforcement, the Council voted to pay almost twice the current market value for the empty former Farm Credit building – approximately $1,000,000 too much, according to a handful of local appraisers.

City officials have repeatedly told the media that the recent purchase of the Farm Credit building at 300 East Grand “will cost the city $1.2 million.” However, the cost of purchasing the building is over $2 million, according to the purchase agreement.

Confidential prisoner records found discarded in dumpster

A box of California Men’s Colony (CMC) prisoner files, that contain private information such as psyche evaluations and social security numbers, was found in a dumpster at the Shell gas station on Madonna Road near Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo last week.

Government agencies and attorneys working on behalf of inmates are required by privacy laws to properly dispose of protected information. Prison employees shred the documents both horizontally and vertically at CMC before they dispose of records protected by the Privacy Act.

Arroyo Grande criticized for lack of flood control

Over the past thirty years, the City of Arroyo Grande has failed to protect homes and the Arroyo Grande Creek from flooding and erosion problems that the city has been paid by developers to correct.

Currently, the city and a developer are in violation because measures required to be in place by Oct. 1 have not been started. The city contends the due date for having the property readied for the rainy season is Oct. 15.
