In an attempt to bolster its budget, California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo has taken the controversial step of increasing recruitment efforts for more out-of-state students while enrolling fewer in-state applicants.
By doing so, Cal Poly is chasing the extra dollars that out-of-state students pay to come to college in San Luis Obispo.

A federal judge has ruled that Atascadero developer Kelly Gearhart’s bankruptcy was applied for fraudulently and as of October 7 his creditors may legally go after his future earnings, according to a November 8 court order.
“They can sue him for a judgment, but they cannot go after properties or assets in his name because the bankruptcy trustees have the right to administer those assets and provide distributions to the unsecured creditors of the estate,” said trustee attorney Ken Gibson who noted it would probably take a year to liquidate the assets.

Economists hired by business leaders in San Luis Obispo County said the local economy appears to be showing signs of recovery while providing seemingly misleading numbers to attendees at the first annual Central Coast Economic Forecast held at Embassy Suites on Friday.
According to Brad Kemp, an economist with Beacon Economics in Los Angeles, the local unemployment rate had fallen from 10.7 percent in August 2009 to 9.9 percent in August 2010, demonstrating a county in the early stages of economic recovery. However, the adjusted unemployment rate for August 2010 is 10.3 percent, according to the state’s Employment Development Department report.

Several south San Luis Obispo County communities have the areas highest unemployment rates, according to figures released by the state’s Employment Development Department.
Oceano leads the county with an 18.4 percent jobless rate for September. Trailing is Nipomo at 13.2 percent, Paso Robles at 11.9 percent and San Luis Obispo city at 11 percent.
The community of Shandon recorded the county’s lowest unemployment rate in September at 4.9 percent. Cayucos was close behind at 5.9 percent, then Cambria at 7.1 percent and Templeton at 7.2 percent.
