“I leave my dogs in a stroller until we get to a spot where I don’t see any vultures or dead birds,” beach goer Laura Best said to KSBY. “And with bringing my little girl here, I am trying to keep them safe.

Fish and Wildlife officials say the dead birds can be hazardous to pets and children. The state officials are not yet sure why flocks of dead birds showed up at Pismo Beach, but they say they will do field necropsies to find out.

Warden Ryan Hanson speculated that the cause could be anything from fish bait attracting the birds to shore, the drought, or even ships hitting a flock of birds.
