Whitman is in a dead heat with Democratic candidate Jerry Brown despite the fact that she has outspent the former California Attorney General. Brown has raised more than $22 million and spent only about $700,000.
Nevertheless, union groups have spent $4.6 million on negative Whitman advertisements, according to the last reporting period which ended June 30.
Whitman campaign spokesperson Sarah Pompei told the Los Angeles Times that Whitman is investing the necessary resources to fight attacks by Jerry Brown.
Brown’s campaign spokesperson Sterling Clifford contends Whitman is pouring unprecedented millions into a campaign of dishonesty.
