A person suffered major injuries as a result of a rollover crash Wednesday morning on Highway 101 near Santa Margarita.

Prior to 10:30 a.m., an SUV crashed into the center divider of Highway 101 about one mile north of Highway 58. The SUV overturned multiple times and came to a rest on its wheels, according to the CHP.

Why Seatbelts Matter in Rollovers

  • Prevents Ejection: Unbelted occupants face a massive risk of ejection during a rollover, and nearly 75% of ejected people are killed. Seatbelts keep you inside the cabin. [1, 2]
  • Improves Safety Feature Performance: Staying in your seat allows airbags and crumple zones to protect you as designed. [1]
  • Spreads Crash Force: The belt distributes severe forces across strong parts of your body, like your pelvis and ribcage, rather than letting you slam into the roof or other passengers. [1]

Risk Reduction Data

  • Passenger Cars: Reduces fatal injury risk by 45% and moderate-to-critical injury risk by 50%.
  • Light Trucks, SUVs, and Vans: Reduces fatal injury risk by 60% and moderate-to-critical injury risk by 65%
