San Luis Obispo Sheriff deputies are searching for four chihuahuas that they unintentionally let loose in Nipomo during a suspect pursuit Tuesday evening.

Shortly after 10 p.m., a deputy attempted to pull over Ruben Rivera, 28, for a traffic violation and an outstanding arrest warrant. At first, Rivera stopped but then he sped away.

He made it only about 160 yards before he lost control of his vehicle and became stuck in a sandy embankment. Rivera then fled the scene on foot and attempted to hide in a neighboring yard.

California Highway Patrol officers, a sheriff’s K-9 and deputies cordoned off the yard and took Rivera into custody. He was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail for felony pursuit, resisting arrest and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

During the arrest, four Chihuahuas were let loose. Deputies are asking anyone who has information about the missing dogs to call 781-4550.
