Romaine lettuce samples  from a Salinas farm  have been found to be contaminated with E. coli and a recall was voluntarily initiated by the producer on Sunday.

Canadian food inspectors notified Tanimura & Antle producers that a check of the vegetable had detected E coli, a bacterium that can cause serious food poisoning. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration consulted in the recall.

The recall is for lettuce that was shipped to Puerto Rico, Canada, and the following states: California, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The True Leaf Farms recall is limited to a single lot of its Field Fresh Wrapped Single Head Romaine that was available at retail stores starting Aug. 2. No illness related to lettuce has been reported, but officials identified the product as having a “best buy” date of Aug. 19. The lettuce is packaged in plastic bags with the UPC number 0-27918-20314-9.
