Children 5 and younger will have the opportunity to make their own picture book with a parent and older children can join a book club. Each child who finishes their book will receive a free book and a tote bag with gift certificates from participating restaurants such as Round Table Pizza and

Mohammad Noori will step down as dean of the engineering college on June 30 and Erling Smith, the vice provost for programs and planning, will assume the duties of the dean until a new dean is found, according to an email to engineering faculty from Cal Poly interim provost Robert Koob earlier today.

“We expect a search to begin this fall and a new dean to be named sometime in the first half of 2011, or as soon as possible after a new Cal Poly president is named,” Koob said in the email.

Judge finds alleged junkyard shooter not competent to stand trial

Judge Edward Bullard ruled Tuesday that Lee Leeds, 34, accused of murdering his father and three others during a shooting rampage at a junk yard in Santa Maria, is not competent to stand trial at this time.

Leeds, arrested in March 2008, is the son of Sharon Ostman, a homeless woman who was murdered in downtown San Luis Obispo.

Ostman’s half-naked body was found partially submerged in San Luis Obispo Creek on July 11, 2005. She had been beaten, sexually assaulted, and murdered. She was 59.

Summer Solstice Reggae Festival at Avila Beach Resort, event photos

Set against the rolling green slopes of the Avila hills, slightly reminiscent of the texture of dreads and rimmed by enough palm trees to feel like the tropics, the Summer Solstice Reggae Festival at Avila Beach Resort was one of the ultimate ways to usher in summer.

Sunshine, the sea, and the gentle presence of smoke wafting innocuously on the breeze heightened the mood as California bands Top Shelf and Still Time took the stage, followed by Alborosie and The Dirty Heads. And the audience couldn’t have been better in tune with the theme. Mixing rasta style with Avila class, the crowd was young, attractive and as laid-back as summer itself.

Downtown Brew clears rumors of closure

For 16 years, notable performers have made music and revelry at San Luis Obispo’s Downtown Brew, but a few days ago, rumors started circulating that the popular night spot had closed its doors. And while the club is in the process of changing owners, its name, its look and its menu – it is not shutting down.

Compass Health, a partner in the San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara Downtown Brew clubs closed their Santa Barbra location and as of June 30, will no longer be affiliated with the San Luis Obispo venue.

Avila Beach Fish and Farmer’s Market, event photos

Flooded by sunlight and in constant view of the sea, this week’s Fish and Farmer’s Market at Avila Beach was a whirl of fresh berries, roasted corn, live music and an easygoing vibe.

Popular among locals and out-of-towners alike, the market makes for a vibrant way to spend a Friday afternoon — and still have time for the beach a scant stone’s throw away. Touted for its fresh seafood and local produce, wares also included olive oil, herbs, honey, vinegars, sauces, handmade dog ‘Sc-arfs’ and a myriad of flowers. An elephant-shaped bounce-house and soft rock by Matt Cross and the One Night Band completed the scene.

Assault victim’s lawyer fights for 911 tape

The lawyer for a developmentally disabled Atascadero man, who was physically assaulted in March by an off-duty San Luis Obispo police officer, is planning on suing Atascadero police to make the 911 call of the incident public.

The victim of the assault, Scott Summers, 50, who is seeking compensation from the San Luis Obispo police officer, claims he can be heard in the background of the tape screaming for help while his stepmother frantically asks police for assistance.

Terry Francke, an attorney with CalAware and a leading advocate on First Amendment issues that support keeping government open and transparent, said that tapes of 911 calls for assistance should be released under normal circumstances and that San Luis Obispo attorney James McKiernan, who is representing Summers, has a fair chance of winning a suit against the Atascadero Police Department.
